164957 - Parametric Investigation on Taut Mooring System of a 5MW SPAR FOWT for Deep Waters Under Normal and Freak Wave-Wind Conditions
Abstract:
Offshore wind energy is a promising renewable energy source and deep waters hold a higher offshore wind energy potential due to stronger and more consistent wind speeds, reduced turbulence, and larger available areas for wind farm installation. Due to the technological and economic viability, floating offshore platforms are more often adopted in the deep water > 150m. For harnessing power effectively, these platforms should be having less motions. Mooring systems like slack and taut are chosen for the same. Due to its smaller footprint, lighter weight and anti-corrosion properties, taut mooring system made of synthetic lines are often considered. The application of taut mooring system in deeper waters for SPAR FOWTs still require a detailed investigation. Thus, this study entails the sensitivity analysis for a taut mooring system by varying certain key design parameters like taut angle and fairlead position. The performance of a 5MW SPAR FOWT is examined in this sensitivity analysis under random and freak wave with steady wind conditions for varying turbine operating status. A coupled aero-hydrodynamic analysis is performed in time domain to compute the motions, line tensions and power under these varying load cases and parameters. It is found that the taut mooring system offers better restrain without affecting the power generation especially during a freak wave condition. The findings help to provide technical support and reference for the application of taut mooring system in deeper water for SPAR FOWTs under normal and extreme sea states.
